I totaly agree with you helen , iv smoked for over 30 years and always smoked where i liked. I dont hear the Government complaining when they are taxing the cigarettes that we smoke n lining their pockets with our money... well hopefuly from next week i will be a none smoker as im trying to stop , but not because of the ban but because of health reasons...

The smoking ban has not really affected me that much, but then saying that i have only been out drinking once since it was inforced.
My experience was..... smoking before going into the pub like some saddo needing my next hit. Then once inside the pub having a drink and instead of staying for another we left and headed for the next pub so i could smoke on the way..... i could smell the smoke on the street as soon as i got outside- it was rather an odd experience.
The next pub was completely dead, 10pm on a saturday night!! wtf huh i thought... so we carried on. We got into new town, and literally crowds of people hanging about outside the pubs getting the next hit from nicotine- sod it i joined them. The atmosphere was good, everyone seemed to be having a laugh and we had a common cause and reason to be united together outside the pubs.
This happened all night long. short visits to the pubs and most of the night spent outside.
I wonder if profits from the pubs are going to be affected, as less time is spent in them, and more time is spent pounding the pavement between pubs.
As for the smoking ban during the day, well i never smoked in shopping centres anyway, and they banned smoking a long time ago- i dont tend to visit pubs during the day, so that has not affected me.
What has affected me though, is the family meal once a week at various different pubs, we tend to eat up and leave straight after (smokers know you need a fag as soon as you have eaten!). So instead of sat around having another couple of drinks, and possibly a desert we are out of there (i suppose this will help with weight watching!)
I am a considerate smoker anyway, always have been. I dont smoke in other peoples houses unless im told im allowed to- im a smoker and i hate other peoples smoke, so i wouldnt want to inflict my smoke on anyone else.

Talking to my sister, who is a non smoker (and so am i, unless i have had several lil drinks) we were discussing the ban in pubs etc... and what she said made alot of sense. Before the ban came in, if she chose to go to a pub, then she made that decision to go into a smoky pub, and wake up the next day with a sore throat, and stinking clothes and hair.. but she now finds it even worse, and she does not choose to walk past a whole load of people who have are just standing in doorways smoking more than they would have if they was inside, and breathing in all their smoke when just on the way to a bus stop... We all know that smoking is bad for you, and we all know the dangers of smoking, but perhaps it should go back to how it was before with the pubs (not so much cafes etc) and we should have a lounge and a bar... problem solved

Just a quick update. A recent survey showed that over the UK pub takings were seriously lower than the same period last year. C'mon landlords, you needs us smokers !!!

Another quick update! Recent studies have ALSO shown that heart disease, heart attacks and general heart related illnesses have dropped by more than 1/3 ever since the smoking ban was introduced. (And I'm a smoker too by the way hehe)
