What is Housing & Council Tax Benefit?
Housing & Council Tax Benefit is paid by local councils to help pay your rent and council tax. How much benefit you receive will depend on your circumstances and how much you have to pay. Second Adult Rebate is for people who are not entitled to help for themselves with their Council Tax but have people living with them who are on low incomes.
Who Can Claim?
If you are
- On a low income - you don't need to be claiming any other benefit to qualify
- Responsible for paying rent
- Your savings are less than £16,000 (different capital rules apply to people over 60)
- You have to pay Council Tax on your home
You may be entitled to Housing or Council Tax Benefit
How much will I get?
The amount you receive will be calculated based on the following:
- Money you and your partner have coming in, including earnings, some benefits and tax credits and things like occupational pensions.
- Your and your partner's capital savings and investments.
- Your circumstances, such as your age, the number of people in your household and the ages of your children, whether you or any of your household are disabled
You can make a trial calculation of your benefit entitlement by completing the council's Benefits Calculator:
