Aspiring young sports writer and budding Hull KR supporter
Gareth Westmorland has won the Rugby League Young Reporter Competition.
...I really didn't think I would win, but I’m over the moon that I have now... Winner Gareth Westmorland
The 15-year old from Hull will now have the opportunity to sit in
the press box at Wembley Stadium on Carnegie Challenge Cup Final day
and write a report on the showpiece match between Hull FC and St Helens.
The competition – organised by the RFL - was open to young people who were interested in a career in the sports media.
Six young wannabe scribes submitted their reports after being selected
to attend the first semi-final at the Galpharm Stadium but it was
Gareth’s copy that was judged to be the best, he will now have the
chance to experience a major national sporting event in the same way as
professional members of the media.
Commenting, Gareth Westmorland said, “I really didn't think I would
win, but I’m over the moon that I have now! My family and I had a great
time at the semi-final at Huddersfield and now my mum; dad and sister
are all looking forward to going to Wembley”.
As well as being asked to write a match report on the Carnegie
Challenge Cup Final for the RFL website: www.therfl.co.uk , Gareth will
also attend the official post-match press conference and listen to the
views of the winning and losing teams.
The match report - which will be intended for publication on Monday 1st
September - will also be distributed to national, regional and
specialist Rugby League newspapers who may choose to include it in
their publications.
