VELLA MAKES A SPLASH IN CARDIFF AHEAD OF MILLENNIUM MAGIC |
|
Hull KR captain Michael Vella is the star of a new Super
League advertising campaign promoting May’s Millennium Magic event in
Cardiff.
In the advert, a giant sized Vella is pictured scoring a try by
diving down the River Taff that runs adjacent to the Millennium Stadium
causing a mini tidal wave.
Stood in the Hull star’s wake, and towering over the Millennium Stadium, is a giant 60 foot high Hull FC captain Lee Radford.
The advert, produced by Newcastle based advertising agency Cravens, is
to promote ‘Super League’s giant weekend of rugby’ where an entire
round of engage Super League fixtures will be played over one weekend
at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
On Sunday 4 May, Vella and his team mates will be hoping to continue
their winning run against local rivals Hull FC when the two sides meet
again in a 4.30pm kick off. Also on the Sunday are the fixtures between
Catalans Dragons and Harlequins RL and St Helens against Wigan Warriors.
Michael Vella said: “It’s brilliant to be asked to be part of a
campaign to promote such a great event. The Millennium Stadium has to
be one of the best stadiums in the world not only for players but also
for fans and I can’t wait to turn out there again in May.
“Last year’s game against Hull FC was superb for two reasons – we beat
our city rivals but our supporters were absolutely fantastic signing
their hearts out for the side.
“This event it unique to Rugby League and the more it grows the
better it will become and I hope our fans turn out in force again this
year.”
The advert was created by getting players from all 12 engage Super
League clubs to pose in variety of positions. In the case of Vella he
had to dive on to a crash mat on a number of occasions as if he was
scoring a match winning try.
Using state of the art computer imagery the crash mat was then replaced
by an image of the River Taff and a giant sized Lee Radford was brought
into the background clinging onto the stadium roof.
Phil Williams, the RFL’s marketing manager, said: “Millennium Magic is
quite simply a giant weekend of rugby league in the Welsh capital. How
better to communicate this to fans then by making some of the biggest
names in engage Super League look like giants overlooking Cardiff.
“Last year’s event was a great carnival of rugby league for fans. This
year we hope that by acting on some of the excellent supporter feedback
we received in 2007 to make May’s event even bigger and better.”
The RFL recently announced an improved entertainment programme for this
year’s event that will include Hull KR’s mascot Rufus the Robin. The
popular New Craven Park based mascot will be up against all the other
club mascots when he goes to battle in the engage Super League Mascot
Games. Hosting the games within the stadium will be well known comedian
and cult funny man Keith Chegwin.
‘Cheggers’ will also return to his musical roots by introducing the
house band who have been specially commissioned to play throughout the
Millennium Magic weekend and will perform sets featuring well-known
covers of songs from the 60’s to recent chart hits.
Tickets to Millennium Magic are still available priced £18 per day for
adults or £30 for a weekend pass. Concessions start from just £5 per
