Australian scrum-half James Webster, who was released by Hull KR this year, has joined National League One club Widnes Vikings.

The 29-year-old former Kingston Rovers scrum half, has signed a two-year deal with Widnes.

The Vikings explained they beat off competition from six other clubs for the signature of the player who almost single-handedly denied them promotion with a man-of-the-match performance for the Robins in the 2006 National League Grand Final.

Widnes sporting director Terry O’Connor, said: “Hopefully he can bring form and professionalism to the club and take us to the next level whilst showing our juniors what it takes to become a top player both on and off the pitch.”

Webster said: “I’m really excited about the move. I met Steve McCormack and Steve O’Connor yesterday and was really impressed with their plans for the future.
“All the clubs I have spoken to had some good points to offer but Widnes was the best.”
