Two tries from Daniel Fitzhenry ensured that the Robins bounced back to secure the two points with a solid, if unspectacular display against Super League new-boys Castleford Tigers.

After the disappointing display at Wakefield the week before, coach Justin Morgan sprung a selection surprise, naming Ben Galea at stand-off, as the Robins welcomed the Castleford Tigers to a very foggy Craven Park.

The Red and Whites set the tone early, with Daniel Fitzhenry registering the opening score inside the first five minutes, from an inch-perfect Ben Galea grubber. Murrell was off-target with the touchline conversion, but Rovers were looking a very different team to the one which played last week. However they were given a scary moment when a Brent Sherwin grubber was touched down by Ryan McGoldrick, only for the video referee Ashley Klein to rule out the score for a knock-on.

The Robins came back at the Tigers, stretching the visitors defence as they searched for another score. The Castleford line held, but mid-way through the half, another grubber kick unlocked the door. This time it was Ben Cockayne who profited, showing his full-back’s instincts to follow up Scott Murrell’s kick. Murrell added the extras, and, full of confidence, the Robins looked for a killer blow just before the break.

With only a couple of minutes to go, they thought they had it. James Webster’s grubber rebounded off the base of the post, and the scrum half followed up to hack it into the in-goal area and touch down. But after some deliberation, the score was ruled out by video referee Klein, who adjudged that Shaun Briscoe was offside in following up the initial kick, and had impeded a Tigers player. As the seconds ticked down to the hooter, Castleford went looking for a score to cut the Robins’ lead, but thanks to good pressure from the Red and White defence, they held out to the interval.
